What Inspires Our Students
At Sylvan Park Paideia Design Center, we Reach for the Outer Limits. It is our motto and it illustrates our belief in the philosophy we practice. Paideia, a Greek word meaning the proper upbringing of a child, is centered on three columns of education: didactic, coaching and seminar. Didactic is directed teaching with a goal of students being able to recall facts. With coaching, students are taught skills for performance. Through seminar, teachers share ideas with students and ask open-ended questions to help them understand the topic. This child-centered approach to learning is aided by a nurturing faculty, a flexible library, Spanish, art, Orff music and daily physical education.
Our Philosophy
Sylvan Park practices the Paideia philosophy, a three-column approach that uses facts, skills and goals to achieve recall, performance and understanding. The ultimate outcome is the best education for every student. In individual and group settings, students learn in an environment that provides safety, respect, and nurtures growth and development for all fellow students, as well as teachers and staff. Because all faculty members are trained in the Paideia philosophy, they are expert at encouraging students to talk about their learning and using questioning to learn how to solve complex problems, which is central to a Paideia school.
Eligibility
Sylvan Park has a zoned population, with first priority given to students who live in the zoned area and second priority to students in the Hillsboro High School Cluster. Students outside the zone may attend if space is available. Students within the Cluster and outside the zone, however, must apply. Students who are entering Kindergarten and have siblings already attending Sylvan Park who live outside the zone have direct access if the application for admission is submitted before the deadline date. For more information about the lottery, contact Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Office.
