About the Art Program
The children learn how to work with a variety of medium
s throughout each school year in both class projects and independent works of art. This includes (but is not limited to) drawing, painting, clay, wood, candle making, etc. They are encouraged to develop their artistic talents through a variety of approaches, and many sources of inspiration can be drawn from the books, posters, and original works of art on display in the classroom. They are introduced to the work of artists outside of the classroom, too! Each year, the students participate in the Mayor's Exhibition and a Student Art Show at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. Mr. Green selects the works for each of these events.
"Children are usually confident about their ability to draw. Nothing should be done to lessen this confidence. If a child does his work conscientiously in the art lesson, he deserves praise and not adverse criticism, even if his finished picture appears to have little artistic merit. For children, the value of drawing lies in the creative activity or process, rather than in an adult's idea of what the finished picture should look like."
