Mark your calendars for February 21st. It’s your chance to feel good about purging and recycling all that stuff you don’t need anymore but weren’t sure how to get rid of. In conjunction with Metro Nashville Public Works, the Sylvan Park Green Team has organized a Hazardous Waste Collection Day. From 9-1 on Saturday, Feb. 21st drop off used electronics and more at the school. Items accepted include small batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes and cell phones. Look for a flyer with more details closer to the date.
Also exciting for Nashville and especially the SylvanPark neighborhood is the opening of Nashville’s first “Green” general store. Scheduled to open January 16th at 4429 Murphy Road (between Caffe Nona and Goldie’s Deli), The Green Wagon will sell environmentally friendly home products such as cleaning supplies, shampoo and more. Many products sold are locally produced, reducing the environmental impact of getting the products to consumers. The store will also feature a refilling station to allow for reusing containers multiple times. Hurray for innovative businesses that make it easier to be green (and without even leaving the neighborhood!)!!
December 2008
New Committee for 2008-09!
Sylvan Park now has a Green Committee focused on raising environmental awareness and how to be more “green.” Efforts so far include working on having an Environmental Assessment done for the school to highlight our energy use and ways to improve, a survey of the teachers about their recycling interest and needs and as yet not completely successful attempts to get the cafeteria to use trays and real silverware instead of Styrofoam and throwaway utensils.
Look for a late winter event for disposable of old computers, paint and other toxic household materials, open to the neighborhood as well as school folk.
