A SPECIALS UPDATE FOR MAY 2011
Physical Education with Coach Belew & Coach Goad
Students have been participating in the First Tee golf program, they have been learning the 9 core values that the program teaches as well as putting. The first tee golf program teaches more than golf. it teaches values that we should all strive to live by such as honesty and integrity. Their web site is www.thefirsttee.org if any of our parents would like to check it out.
Thank goodness we have the great gym when it is rainy!!
Field day is this Friday, May 13th. A letter went home last week outlining times and needs.
Thanks for working with your child on the rules during the school year. It is hard to believe that another year is almost over.
Spanish with Senorà Allen
Spanish is getting ready for our Latin Fair on May 20 from 10 to 12 in the gym. All are invited to see the projects created by the children.
All grade levels are studying "La Familia" (The Family) and having a wonderful time!
Art with Mr. Green
I went to a workshop at Cheekwood on the Modern Masters - it was excellent and I recommend it to all students. Unfortunately due to time we can't not schedule a field trip for this year. While I was there I learned about a program for 3rd graders next school year. It's a full day program during school year. In the morning students tour the mansion, gardens, and museums in afternoon they create art. They only pick for 4 schools from the district - and we were picked!! Details will go home at the beginning of next school year for the 3rd grade.
With 2nd, 3rd, and 4th we have doing 3d architectural artwork - the kids have loved it! Kindergarten and 1st also did a 3D creative art project and enjoyed creating. Loads of artwork will be sent home next week so be on the look out.
Unfortunately we are not able to complete all the clay projects. As some of you know our kiln broke a few months ago. The kiln itself was fixed right however we are still waiting on Metro to come fix the plug for the kiln. If anyone has access to a kiln let me know.
Some exiting new is that Bellemeade Kroger recently gave the art dept. a $500 donation!! Stop by Kroger to see the big thank you card all the classes did (it's by the service desk)...and don't forget to thank them by shopping there!
Thank you for a great year!
Music with Mrs. Hotchkiss
Our kindergarten students have just had their first experience with hand drums. All students will continue singing pentatonic and diatonic songs. They will also develop instrumental skills using some of our Orff arrangements. These will include movement with our songs and instrumental playing.
Congratulations to the 3rd graders for their performance at the recorder concert! We are not finished with recorders by any means, however. We are beginning to learn the Sylvan Park March; we are going to take our final test on music notes and symbols; and we are going to have a seminar on a piece of recorder music.
Our 4th graders are finishing up their presentations on Tennessee musicians. We then plan to learn several of our Tennessee state songs, and some traditional Tennessee folk songs and dances.
Library with Mrs. Claassen
The Library will be meeting with all students the last few weeks to go over Summer Reading Incentives. I will be reviewing different reading incentives throughout Nashville including the Nashville Public Libraries Summer Reading Incentive. I will also be highlighting Fiction Stories that will be on the Big Screen this summer like “Mr.Popper’s Penguins”. I always like to encourage students to “Read it before they see it!”
Last Day of Check-Out is Monday May 16th! All books will need to be returned by Friday, May 27th.
Overdue? Lost?
If your student currently has 1 or more books overdue or the book has been reported lost or damaged, you will be receiving a note home in the next few weeks. Before sending the notice home, I encouraged all teachers to double check rooms and I checked the library shelf for the overdue book.
Replacement of book can be done in a variety of ways:
-
Cash or check for replacement value
-
Purchasing a comparable replacement. Same title and Hardbound book
If a book is found and returned, I can only refund on option #1.
If you have any questions or concerns you can email, stop by or call me. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
