Sylvan Park Library News

A lot is happening in the library. Read Ms. Calverley’s newsletter below to learn about the upcoming book fair, volunteer needs and more.

4th Grade Engineering Unit

To wrap up the 4th grade Science Engineering Unit, Jack O’Neil, a mechanical engineer of IC Thomasson, came to speak to Mrs. Eberle’s class. Jack shared the plans of his current project with the students. This was a great opportunity for the students to see the “real world application” of what they had learned in the classroom.

Teacher Appreciation Breakfast

Teacher Appreciation celebrated the teachers and staff by hosting a breakfast that included bagels and pastries from Star Bagel. The group also provided coffee, juice, casseroles and quiches. It was another fun way to say thank you for everything they do.

West End Musicians

Sixth grade band students from West End Middle School performed outside Sylvan Park Oct. 3 before the Prospective Parent Coffee for Sylvan Park parents with administrators from West End. All students, led by Madeline Mara, attended Sylvan Park!

Trunk or Treat at HHS

Families from all Hillsboro cluster schools are invited to dress up and get treats at Hillsboro’s Prospective Family Open House and Trunk or Treat on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Academies, clubs, teams and other groups will hand out treats and showcase the opportunities available at Hillsboro High School.

New Trees for Garden/Playground

Students Finn Murphree and Ellie Mac DeGiron helped dads Barry Murphree and Ryan Ervin plant a red maple, a tulip poplar and a Rose of Sharon in the school garden and on the playground. The Tulip Poplar, donated by Barry, is that state tree of Tennessee.

We invite family members to attend, if able, to join in on the school spirit and celebration!

Science News

Last Friday, second graders investigated friction and considered how important friction is for polar bears who live on ice.  They were so independent that second grade lead science volunteer Molly Miller, teachers, and parent volunteers (Rachel Gibbs, Kaitlan Brock, Eric Spivey) could (mostly) kick back and watch them experiment. Kindergarten students will have their first science lab this week on October 4.

Everyone interested is urged to attend the first meeting of the Science Committee at 8 am Monday, Oct. 14 in the science room.

Spirit Night @ ML Rose

ML Rose is giving Sylvan Park 15% of sales ALL DAY TODAY, so come for lunch or bring the whole family to check out the new kids menu items and patio! Bring a paper or digital copy of the flyer for our school to receive the percentage.
