Sylvan Park Virtual Spirit Days

Sylvan Park Super Scientists Activity #4

New this week: Explanation on YouTube!
This week, explore What Floats and What Doesn't Float? (It depends on density.) Grab your science journal and get ready to have fun experimenting with water and items you have around the house!

Sharing Your "Positive"

Hello Sylvan Park Families!

As we start this sixth week of learning at home and continue to cope with the unusual circumstances we find ourselves in,  we thought it might be helpful to pass along an article about how to de-stress your kids and yourself.

Below is a link to an article from the PBSkids for Parents site that we thought might be beneficial. We've included some questions you can use to have a conversation with your spouse, your family, with other Sylvan Park families (virtually of course!),  or for self-reflection.  We'd love to hear about the positive parts of this safer-at-home experience, so we have set up a Padlet for you to share your thoughts.
We would love for you to share your "positive" with our school community. Please use the link below to add a quick note about the positive you have found.

Calling All Sylvan Park Readers

Want to earn badges for all the reading you do? It's simple! Choose a book, read at least 20 minutes a day and track your reading on Beanstack. We are excited to share the power of reading with you, your teachers, family, and friends. If you have questions, email Ms. Calverley (Laura.calverley@mnps.org). Happy reading!

Access Beanstack through your child's Clever page OR by going to http://mnpssylvanparkes.beanstack.org/Log in with your student's 190# and MMDD birthday and start logging minutes spent reading to earn virtual badges and help our school stack up minutes.

School Supply Orders

Want to avoid the hustle and bustle of shopping for school supplies this summer? Once again, we are offering the School Supply Kit program here at Sylvan Park. The teachers have created a custom kit for each grade with all of the supplies they will need for the year. Once you order through the easy online ordering system, your child's kit will be waiting for them at the Meet Your Teacher event at the beginning of the school year. It's easy, affordable, and a great way to support the school. Be on the lookout for more information on for how to order next week!

Sylvan Park Garden Still Growing!

Parent Avery DeGiron has planted tomatoes, sweet potatoes, squash and beans in the garden and plans to transplant some corn plants to the school garden next week. Check out the photos she shared.

Summer Reading Challenge is On!

The Nashville Public Library isn't waiting for summer; the summer reading challenge is live with chances to win prizes for reading! Register and access resources on the library's summer reading challenge page. Happy reading!

New from the library is NPL Universe bringing library programs live to your home virtually. Enjoy your favorite story times, puppet shows and programs from branches around the city. View the entire lineup here.

MNPS Support for Students

Breakfast and lunch pick-up: Services will continue every weekday that schools are closed and will be available to anyone under the age of 18. No MNPS paperwork is required, however, students must be present to collect meals, per federal law. The bagged or boxed meals will be provided in a drive-through setup and will be available for pickup between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at these locations.

Delivery meals: Six MNPS school buses are delivering to locations throughout Nashville where students are able to pick up the meals. The routes, including locations and approximate times, are available here.

Free books and school supplies: Book'em will offer free books and the PENCIL foundation will offer free school supplies to students at rotating sites where meals are being provided. The distribution schedule for both is here.

Diversity Committee Survey

We want to hear from YOU. Please fill out this short demographic survey, which will help us understand the needs of our diverse community. You will also have the opportunity to let us know if we can highlight your family on our Diversity bulletin board! The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete. Families Encouraged to Complete 2020 Census

It is important for families to complete the 2020 Census Survey because information gathered impacts how much money schools receive in Title I funding. Children not counted in our district could negatively impact funding for the next 10 years. It is critical that as many households in Nashville as possible submit the forms.

Families are encouraged to fill out and submit the census information. The census can be submitted online, via phone, or mail. It is also crucial to note that information identifying individuals is not supposed to be shared with other government agencies.
